Pain Asks the Question. Cannabis Offers an Answer

conscious awareness, openness, spiritual awakeningNothing demands our attention like pain.  Whether it is physical or emotional or mental or spiritual, chronic or acute–pain alters our experience until we respond to its demands.

Sometimes we think we have successfully compartmentalized the dull nerve ache or breaking heart ache or the mental anguish ache well enough to hide from others the distress of pain.  But we are only fooling ourselves–the pain is evident in our facial expression, our body posture, the undertone of our comments…  pain impacts all activity and every relationship until we listen to its demands.

I’ve looked at pain from many sides now… living the emotional pain of a traumatic childhood, enduring the chronic pain of spinal cord injury, assisting others to deal with the various pains in their lives as a psychotherapist… just to name a few.  In all instances, whether the pain was mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical, it demanded the same result:  relief.

Relief. Most of us just do our best to manage the pain.  Complete relief and–dare I say–healing seem out of reach. For most people whose lives are impacted by some type of pain regularly, relief is more of a hope than a reality.  Whether our physical pain develops as a result of emotional pain or our spiritual pain spews forth in mental distress or our mental distress is caused by physical pain… it doesn’t matter.  Pain relief must address all levels, and it’s a daunting task to obtain and sustain relief/healing in one area let alone four aspects of our being.

That’s what I had come to, anyway, after twelve years of increasingly troublesome nerve pain.  I discovered hemp CBD in 2014 and used it to take myself off of all forms of opioid and nsaid medication post spinal surgery.  It was enough to manage the baseline pain, but it didn’t stop random muscle cramping or chronic sciatic pain… until I upped my dosage on a hunch from 50mg per day to 200mg per day, and then the cramps and nerve pain stopped.

Just stopped.  Relief… as long as I kept the dosage that high.  Wow.  No more being awakened in the night to the pain of a muscle cramp.  After 8 years, that’s a  big wow, right?

awakening, cannabis, missionAnd so, a new journey into the amazing plant called cannabis that answered the call of pain with relief.

There is so much to share on this topic: the endocannabinoid system and how it works to maintain homeostasis in the body, the synergistic “entourage effect” of using whole plant cannabis, the meanderings of a woman’s whose mission has become creating cannabis infusions and tinctures that are targeted to specific health benefits, cultivation musings… who knows what I will talk about next.  For sure, though, it’s most likely going to be about my new answer/mission: cannabis.
